
Nobody
expects much from Peasant Company units, the cheapest units in the
game. While their combat values border on non-existent, peasant infantry
offers tremendous utility for a low cost. All Peasant Companies are able
to Infiltrate, giving them the option to begin the game in a forward position
occupying a location it would take the same unit 2 turns to reach with movement
orders. The ability to occupy a key terrain feature can be instrumental
in a game and Infiltrate makes it happen. Also, despite their weaknesses,
Peasant Companies are still units. They can add to formation attacks and
tie down opposing units in base contact with them the same as much more
formidable units.
The
Standard Foot unit has a variety of uses depending on the rank of
unit you choose to use. The elite Standard Foot unit is the only unit in
the game with Bypass special equipment and deserves special note. If you
are planning to capture 'Mechs or vehicles, a successful Bypass attempt
can be a game winner. Veteran Standard Foot units offer Point Defense to
share their defense value with friendly units. This ability can be useful
when retreating damaged units from the front lines. Placing the damaged
units in base contact with the infantry will increase their defense values
until they can be repaired. The green Standard Foot unit has Camouflage
special equipment to provide enhanced defense while in hindering terrain.
If using this unit, be sure to place lots of hindering terrain in the terrain
pool when preparing the battlefield.
The
Hoverbike Squad is an exceptional unit. As the only infantry unit
with the hover speed mode, it is exceptionally mobile and able to easily
break away from opposing units. All Hoverbikes have Evade special equipment
increasing their survivability against ranged attacks. Energy weapons make
them naturals for harassing vehicles and 'Mechs, against whom their attacks
will inflict full damage. Elite Hoverbikes with Pulse equipment can be very
effective in this capacity, especially when used in formation to increase
their chance to score a successful hit. Lastly, with their high speed, Hoverbikes
are very good at racing for an opponent's deployment zone to gather some
victory points. Hoverbikes: exceptional capabilities, exceptional value.
Cavalier
Battle Armor is well-balanced, offering an inexpensive mix of speed,
defense and ballistic damage. It is very flexible and able to perform a
variety of missions. This Jump Jet-equipped unit is able to quickly maneuver
on the battlefield. Its medium-range ballistic weaponry make the Cavalier
equally effective against all targets and give it limited stand-off capabilities.
The elite version, with a maximum range of 10 inches, is especially well
suited to stand-off attacks. Steel Wolves Cavalier Battle Armor has Armor
Piercing special equipment, making it effective against targets with defensive
special equipment. Cavalier armor is a terrific choice as a general infantry
unit for any battleforce.

Purifier Battle Armor's strengths are speed and hitting power. Getting
the first shot is vital to this unit, since its poor defense value won't
protect it from enemy fire. Make use of blocking terrain to cover the Purifier's
advance, and attempt to flank the opponent. This maneuver will protect your
unit from a counter-attack. Use a formation move with Jump Jets to keep
three or more units together for an effective ranged combat formation attack
following your move.
Hauberk
Battle Armor provides several very useful buy specialized functions
and lots of surprises to an unwary opponent. Equipped with Infiltrate and
Point Defense special equipment, Hauberk armor is ideal as an escort to
other poorly-defended units with Infiltrate. Peasant Companies are a natural
unit to deploy with Hauberk Battle Armor in an advanced position on the
battlefield. Hauberk also has outstanding range. Given the fact that it
is an infantry unit, expect your opponent to ignore your Hauberks, giving
you a surprise shot from up to 14 inches away when he's not expecting it.
All Hauberk Battle Armor is difficult to eliminate, as well, since it acquires
Heavy Armor late in its combat dial. Don't expect your Hauberk units to
go down without a fight!
Fast
and well-armed, Clan Battle Armor is another effective offensive
infantry unit. With a top speed value of 10, this unit can get places fast.
A modest range gives it the potential for ranged attacks, but this unit
really shines once it is in base contact with opposing 'Mechs. Clan armor
is equipped with Flamers and can do some serious damage to a 'Mech with
just one hit. Very few 'Mechs can withstand the two clicks of heat a successful
Flamer hit delivers without some discomfort! A wise opponent will watch
Clan units closely, making them effective as a means of channeling the movement
of opposing 'Mechs.
All
ranks of Gnome Battle Armor come equipped with Reflective Armor.
This special equipment reduces the damage sustained from energy ranged attacks
by 2 clicks. Since all energy attacks against infantry are reduced to 1
click, Reflective Armor makes the Gnome immune to damage from energy weapons.
Gnome Battle Armor is a very well-balanced unit and effective for its point
cost. In formation, it will give any opponent cause for concern. Its ballistic
weaponry make it equally effective against opposing infantry, vehicles or
'Mechs. Defense, mobility and firepower: Gnome Battle Armor has it all.
