Description of the Game Awards...

Spiel de Jahres
The German Spiel des Jahres is perhaps the world's most prestigious game award. Founded in 1978 by a group of German game critics to promote awareness and to increase the cultural value of games, the award recognizes outstanding games based on originality, playability, and educational value of the game idea; organization, clarity and understandability of rules; packing and layout of the gameboard and the game rules; and functionality and overall quality of the game materials included

Deutscher SpielePreis
The Deutscher SpielePreis is one of two major German game awards, and is generally considered to be the "gamer's game" award, in contrast to the Spiel des Jahres, which generally leans toward recognizing family games.

GAMES Magazine's GAMES 100
Each year since 1980, GAMES Magazine has published a Buyer's Guide to Games in their year-end holiday issue. Except for once or twice in the early 1980s, the article has listed and reviewed one hundred games each year, and was thus dubbed The GAMES 100. Early in the feature's history, the article served as a reference to many games available on the market, new and old, listing such long-time classic titles as Monopoly, Clue, and Scrabble--and even the occasional toy like Frisbee. In later years, the feature has focused more and more on recognizing the best and most unique new board and card games.

GAMES Magazine's Hall of Fame
Created in 1984 to honor games that have met or exceeded the highest standards of quality and play value and have been continuously in production for at least 10 years; i.e., classics.

Gamers Choice Award
The Gamers' Choice awards are sponsored by the Strategy Gaming Society, the oldest continuous gaming organization in the United States. The SGS serves to bring together people from all over the world in mutual enjoyment of our small but intensely-lived hobby and help spread the word about the wonderful world of strategy gaming.

Mensa Best Mind Game
For the past several years, Mensa has recognized a rather quirky selection of some of the best games on the American market. Each year, the Mensa Mind Games event is held somewhere in the United States. Mensa members are invited to play and judge the games which have been submitted to compete for the award (war games and electronic games are not eligible). The five most popular games based on originality, game play, aesthetics, play value, and clarity of instructions are named Mensa Select.

Fairplay Magazine's Best Card Game "a la carte" Award
As the only German game magazine to feature card games in a regular column, called "à la carte", the editor decided in 1991 that the game market needed a specific award for card games. The FAIRPLAY award became an instant hit. The games are elected by a jury of people within the game industry.
